If you haven’t seen Sidney Lumet’s/Paddy Chayefsky’s Network, you owe it to yourself to do so. Chayefsky’s masterpiece is one of those few films that strikes a near perfect balance between social commentary and comedic satire. Being a child of a later generation, it has taken me a little while to discover the hidden gems of the seventies…Network is one of those gems.

Thirty-five years on, the film appears even more brilliant than it was first released, for we increasingly see what Network portrays as absurd extremes, becoming manifest in real life. The most significant, of course, is the victory of news as entertainment over news as, well, news. The dark underbelly of this modern beast is the actual creation of news for the sake of entertainment (or, in the case of the Balloon Boy, for the sake of notoriety). To what extent this actually takes place is a topic worthy of debate. Being an optimist, I want to believe in the good intentions of the people who serve us our news. That said, as the line between news and reality television continues to blur, one wonders if we’re headed, beyond Network, to the world of Stephen King’s Running Man?

Just watched the DVD extras for Network…what an amazing movie…Paddy Chayefsky was truly a brilliant screenwriter…
